BBQ Pole Award: Wayne Wilkins,
owner and operator of Huckleberry's BBQ, based out of Pine
Mountain Ga., delivered on his word to cater any NASCAR team
winning the Bud Pole Award with his famous BBQ chicken and ribs.
Robert Yates Racing employees were treated to an overload of
chicken and ribs generously donated by Wilkins. Dale Jarrett and
his #88 UPS Ford Taurus won the Bud Pole Award at Daytona. The
tradition began for Huckleberry's when Bruton Smith, Chairman of
Speedway Motorsports Inc., contacted Wilkins on a recommendation
from the Georgia State Patrol. Wilkins, unaware of the NASCAR
industry and the demand involved, graciously accepted the offer
to cater Smith's SMI facilities. As demands grew from drivers
and teams requesting his famous BBQ chicken and ribs,
Huckleberry's became known as the "Official Ribs of Speedway
Motorsports Inc., supplying exclusively to drivers and crew.
Fans who witness a steady flow of teams making their way over to
the Huckleberry trailer, hope Wilkins will change his mind and
supply them with the same. Huckleberry's is working on a way to
incorporate sales to the public. "Huckleberry's BBQ Sauce" will
be sold on line by early summer. Trackside sales at any SMI
location are in the near future. Huckleberry's BBQ proudly
supports Speedway Children's Charities, donating portions of
their proceeds directly to the charity. While many have shown
interest in sponsoring Huckleberry's and their Pole Award BBQ,
the right opportunity has not come along. "I created and protect
my investment" states Wilkins "I have not considered adding a
sponsor to join us because I just don't feel right about it yet.
If a company is interested, I'll listen but I won't be quick to
sign anything. I have to feel right about it, that's all. This
is a big opportunity but I want the right people with me and
they have to have to share the same passion as I do." No word if
they made it over to Kyle Busch's shop yet...(3-12-2005)
